The cover of the 1977 album Lee Konitz recorded for Chiaroscuro Records, Nonet, a band which was made up of Konitz (alto saxophone); Burt Collins (trumpet, flugelhorn, piccolo trumpet); John Eckert (flugelhorn); Jimmy Knepper (trombone); Sam Burtis (bass trombone, tuba); Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone); Ben Aronov (piano); Knobby Totah (bass); and Kenny Washington (drums). This Konitz ensemble is one of several included on Bob Hecht’s latest playlist, this one being 17 songs devoted to nonets.

NONETS — “Look Ma, No Net!”
A playlist by Bob Hecht
.
Dear Readers and Playlist Listeners:
…..In this episode of our progressive instrumentation playlists, we add a ninth instrument to the mix to form a Nonet!
…..Our title is a reference to the notable Lee Konitz Nonet. Lee was a great one for wordplay and called one of his albums, “Yes, Yes Nonet,” a reference to the ancient Broadway musical show, “No, No Nanette!” Pardon my adding to that chain of corny wordplay!
…..The selections will speak for themselves. One of the most famous jazz nonets was the Miles Davis “Birth of the Cool” band, and we lead off with Miles’ “Boplicity” from that classic recording. Recordings by Blue Mitchell, Sonny Rollins, Alan Ferber, Andrew Hill, Clifford Brown and a handful of lesser known but great bands follow. And, of course, Lee Konitz.
…..Enjoy!
