Down in The Attic
I go to the basement for the splendor
of bare dirt floor finally someone has
made order of the mess and I don’t believe
I prefer it here I can be alone with thousands
of voices all still in the groove creeping mildew
heaven to touch a stray Messiaen misfiled
Nat Cole natty and debonair but not nearly
so cocksure as the Sinatra pile and cool cool
Crosby and Doris Day by Night by day
the whole spot crooning at pitch wobbly
dish warped inevitable hey Fred why don’t you
bury me here under your floorboards among
the innumerable black stones no eulogies please
just play that damn good music yeah!
