Caught in a Storm
I thought I heard chimes
in the wind calling my name
I swear they claimed I had little time
to open my eyes to the universe
the rain rippled on a nearby tin roof
as though Milt Jackson was part of the storm
I realized my remaining time was brief yet
I heard Nina Simone at the edge of a wood
singing “Feeling Good” with a lilt
and power that lifted me off the ground
I lifted my face into the rain without
complaint it was like diving into
an elegant pool of sound such as
the Duke might produce and I smiled

I love the way the poem evokes the music through the experience of wind and rain. I enjoyed the accompaniment of the words spoken aloud together with the photo and the recording. So lovely. All of it.
What a beautiful poem, Mr. Newell; and such a nice reading, Joe.
–Just right for this time of year.
Michael has a way of connecting his experiences to all of our own. Such a gifted writer and special human being.
