Learning Brazilian
I no longer roll my r’s.
I get nasal,
lost as I am in learning a new language.
Portuguese always held a special mystique.
This begins to wane
as I enter its world,
master new sounds,
grapple with word endings,
finally understand what Jobim’s lyrics mean.
Brazilians insist sadness belongs in love songs.
Saudade is foreign to strangers
who don’t come from this land of samba,
of happy people who celebrate the passion of longing.
