Our poems are triangles.
Isosceles triangles disguised as odes.
Our sonnets too square for Ornette Coleman.
Circles describe peaches to be round and fuzzy.
Sweet enough for Walt Whitman or Allen Ginsberg.
Our poetic lives are trapped inside refrigerated rectangles.
How many of us will escape through
a rhombus window? Index fingers
and thumbs desperately contemplating
the next shape of modernism.
