Second Set
He is Miles, this man
with trumpet in hand,
cheeks fill to land
each note with grace
to raucous this place.
The sax-man riffs like
Coltrane himself,
body moves in beat
with heat matched
by the drummer. Legs
jump, arms pump,
deep grin as he tattoos
the skins. Walkin’ live
in 1960, tonight a runaway
train to Paris, keyboard
rockin’ the rails. Then
I was 10, school uniform
and clunky shoes, innocent.
But tonight, tonight the steam
and sex of the driving pulse
transports me to a time
I wish I had known.
