Charlie Parker
1920 - 1955

"I didn't know a thing about harmony. I thought all music was played in 1 key. After I learned the scales, I taught myself to play blues in all the 12 keys. Then I learned 'I Got Rhythm ' & 'Cherokee' in all 12 keys. Then I was ready."

Charlie Parker

Charlie Parker's real genius is in how he reached deep inside the culture and touched others who then spread his voice. Entire careers were made because of the table Bird set, and an entire generation of fans shook its head in wonder, alternately awe struck and energized by the sound...disturbed and disenchanted by his overindulgence. The musicians he affected and the sound he initiated continue to touch us, 50 years later, six degrees of separation later.
