Duke Ellington
1899 - 1974

"It's hard to decide where jazz starts or stops, where Tin Pan Alley begins and jazz ends - where the boundary lies between classical and jazz. I feel there is no boundary."

Duke Ellington

A man who defined an entire era through the life of his music, Ellington's work became a major part of this century's play. He wrote and played, and managed the greatest musicians in the world; carefully massaging their egos and talents, leaving each with room to spontaneously dream their own dreams…Perhaps the greatest gift he left beyond the music was the canvas of creativity he began - a colorful and inspirational aural painting for musicians who have long since wished upon Duke's rich black and tan fantasies.

"Formal training, to him, implied adhering to the rules and a lack of creativity. He didn't like the rules in anything. To discard a rule was a source of inspiration to him because he immediately saw the way to make it work in reverse."
