Chet Baker
1929 - 1988

"I remember how fresh his first take was. He followed the chords as if he had known them all his life. Notes became pivots connecting the chords. His intuition was flawless, his musical choices perfect."
- Herbie Hancock

Chet Baker was the ultimate southern California jazz icon. You look at him and can't help but think of unkempt second story apartments overlooking the corner of Sunset and Western, or of men in naugahyde diners smoking filterless cigarettes and drinking black coffee - mud in fact; their eyes studying the back pages of the sports section, the fifth at Hollywood Park of great interest. Their smiles come easy but are usually brief, and only between 8 PM and 2 AM..... One can never forget their introduction to Chet Baker's music. It is subtly sleazy and sleek, oozing after hours sensuality and verve. His voice comes at you from left field, like Dylan's, off key and eccentric, a phrase or two of whispered perfection entwined with a phrase or two of chaos...

Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker
by James Gavin

Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker, is biographer James Gavin's dark profile of Baker's demise - a book so dramatic and compelling that it effectively becomes the reader's personal vehicle for transport into Baker's seductive, tormented, seedy world.

The Trumpeter/Bas-Relief Jazz Tile
by John Leon

Sculptor John Leon's bas-relief jazz tiles are cast in Hydrostone, which is a hard gypsum. Bas-relief (pronounced, bah) is low relief, which means the area of the sculpting is very low from the surface. It is much like a sculpted drawing. They can be hung on a wall, propped up on a ledge or shelf, or even grouted into a wall as tiles.

The metal trumpet dates from the 2nd millennium BC in Egypt, when it was a small ritual or military instrument sounding only one or two notes. Used in various forms as a military and sometimes civilian signal instrument--as the straight Greek salpinx, the similar Roman tuba, and the Roman lituus, straight with an upturned bell--it came into prominence as a musical instrument in the Middle Ages.
