Self-Portrait of the Artist

_________________________________________________

About Shara Banisadr

Raised in an artistic family of art collectors, musicians, painters, and writers, Shara Banisadr was always interested in art, but wanted to be a collector rather than develop the discipline to become an artist herself. As a young adult she left her birth place and the tumultuous times of revolution in Tehran, Iran. She subsequently lived in various parts of the world – Paris, Canada, and finally Washington, D.C. -- and found no matter where she was she couldn’t escape the call of the artist within her

One day a wise man asked her an important question: “What would you do if you won the lottery?”

“I would go to school and study Fine Art,” she immediately replied. Although she didn’t win the lottery, it was a wake-up call for her to pursue her passion.

An American artist with a spirit of adventure and a love of play and challenge, Shara’s subject matter comes out of her intense love of reading. “When I listen to music, read a book, or watch a good movie, my soul gets inspired. Because I don’t have any technical knowledge of those art forms, I am able to translate that passion into other media such as my paintings of horses or musicians. When I go to a gallery or museum, though, and look at sculpture or painting, my technical side becomes stronger than the emotional one. Therefore, I am influenced more by other kinds of art, like poetry or books, than by painting and sculpture.”

It is interesting to note that most of her collectors are artists in different media, or artists who have not had the opportunity to practice their craft. It is the strong emotion that Shara puts into her work that moves others.

To Shara, learning the craft of art is not the difficult part. That simply requires a good teacher and the discipline to practice and perfect. The challenge of being an artist, she says, is the arduous task of finding one’s center – the place where knowledge of the craft meets the soul to create art. She calls this place the "Center of Your Artistic Being," where you as a person meet the artist within.

“Like poet and writer, I as an artist, participate in the physical labor of creation. Just as a pilgrim who journeys to find metaphysical truth, my journey is to go to the Center of my Being and find the jewel inside.”

This is Shara’s journey, to find the mystery of Self and learn to live from her own Center.
